Default Help needed Blank screen in ubuntu

MY ubuntu installation gone kaput. please help me.

I tried to take snapshot of while using some compiz eye candy. Suddenly i got a message that /home/******/Desktop folder is not present. and the system logged off from GUI. after logging in again I found that only wallpaper is coming and nothing else is present: no icons, no menu bar absolutely nothing. Even right click is not working. So is no other key combination including Ctrl + Alt + Backspace. Only way to restart or do anything is manual reboot.

Please help me recover the system

.... I dont think i can help you with your problem , but Next time you screw your GUI Dont Manual reboot ....... just

press Cntrl+Alt+F1 ...It takes you to the console mode
and type in poweroff (No caps/No space) (The Shutdown command)

If you want to come back to the GUI mode press Cntrl+Alt+F7

Most probably you are going to be trouble shooting your GUI problem from the console mode , and also possibly with your os cd
