Default Help needed with ethernet connection

I am currently using Ubuntu 8.10 and everything was fine till yesterday. But today when I started my computer, it is not connecting to internet.
I use Asianet cable connection through ethernet. The motherboard model is Asus P5KPL-CM.
Friends, till yesterday everything was fine but today no connection in Ubuntu. I am posting through Windows so the network port doesn't have any problems.
Help me please

Don't clearly remember where the network file is located in Ubuntu but try in terminal,

sudo /etc/init.d/network start|stop|restart <try one> [also try network(ing)]

Switch on the net, boot in Ubuntu and type interminal:
sudo dhcpcd eth0
This will ask for user password enter it and dhcp will lease an IP address. If not post what it says here.
Also post the output of:
ifconfig

Today I update my system. Now internet connection is not starting by itself. Network Manager Applet is displaying message "Network Manager is not running".
I am able to connect to internet by issuing command "sudo dhclient".
