CD version is good when you have internet connection to download necessary softwares later. A DVD version contains extra softwares which you can use on a PC not connected to internet.

DVD may not always have the latest packages. So, whether cd or DVD, you must have internet.

To answer your question, CD is like going abroad with only clothe you are wearing.
DVD is like packing a extra suitcase of clothes which you might need when you are in abroad.

You mean how many distros? There are literally thousands available. You can even remaster a unique distro compilation for yourself. Since you're a beginner, stick with the usual suspects like the *buntu family (choose one depending on your requirements and system config).

You might want to check http://www.distrowatch.com to list most of the active distros out there.

For Ubuntu download the CD ISO. There are no performance difference only the difference is in additional packages,,,
If you are looking for distros like OpenSUSE, Fedora, go for the DVD; the bundled choice of desktop environments makes it worth it...

dude opensuse & fedora are not DISTROS , they are true open source prject with complete set of packages

FEDORA is REDHAT linux opensource project not a distros!!

SUSE linux is the open source linux platform can also used with linux set of server administration

UBUNTU,openGEU,mandriva, foresight etc is the desktop linux so it is called as "DISTROS"

fedora & suse are worked with command prompt

@damngoodman999 - Negative. Do read what a Linux distribution (or distro) actually is, here.

i know off course "suse & fedora" are called distros for some reason , if its not a distros as called means then its should be sold for prices also for the home users

remember why "redhat" not released the project for desktop and home ???

the complete set redhat "linux" not the EL (enterprise linux) only linux packages are covered with the FEDORA as core .

UBUNTU and other donot carry any packages as suse or fedora !! but later it can be installed but they donot come with the distros set

Well. DistroWatch sure does not give the actual picture of the popularity of a distro, one can at least use it to explore the different distros that are out there. And it is not always that all the major distros work for a person. There are so many distros for so many types of people - different distro serves a different purpose (mostly).

Who knows if one ends up liking an esoteric (no so popular) distro, preferring it over all the major ones.
