first go by removing/formatting the partitions used by Fedora Core I.

besides, did you try booting from your XP cd and executing the two commands:
fixmbr & fixboot (in Recovery Console)

I think they should do the job.

also, since you have Service Pack 2 installed, that's why your Windows XP cd is not working. You will have to create a slipstream cd of Windows XP with Service Pack 2 in order to be able to work with it.
go to http://www.nliteos.com/ and download Nuhi's software (nLite) for slipstreaming Windows XP cd with Service Pack 2.

well..what i use to do is..........
boot with win98 bootable floppy or cd...
at a:\>fdisk /mbr...
this will remove the lilo or grub from master boot record...

than boot in window XP.....go into disk management.....
i.e (right click on My computer, than Manage, than disk management....)
than simply those partition that contain fedora core..
i.e /root.../boot/../swap..
hope this will work......

I think clearing the mbr will get grub off the bios. I am not sure though. Its by and far the easiest method to remove linux partition without a format.

Just restoring the Master Boot Record doesn't remove Linux. You also have to delete the Linux partition. To remove Linux partition, you have too boot from the first Fedora Core CD and use Linux fdisk. I have posted the steps in one of the threads for PCQ Linux. I think the steps would remain the same for FC1. Please search.
