Default Airtel R.B. Comtec Modem Black in Ubuntu

Hey,
Recently installed Ubuntu 8.04.01(Hardy Heron). Wondering if there was any driver for my Black, R.B. Comtec USB Modem, that airtel gave me. The modem has 2 lights- power and data. It works fine on XP, but under Ubuntu only the power light switches on. Called the airtel guys, and they refused to offer any service for Linux Flat out. Any solutions?

Data light will glow only when modem is transferring data.
Go to terminal and switch to super user
Now enter the command
wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

Your modem should be detected here. If it does, open the file for editing(you will have to open it as root).
Here change phone number to *99#
And change username and password to anything you like. A character may be there in the beginning of lines for phone number, username and password. Remove them .

Thinkfree, Thank you. But I have no idea how to do all of that. I got to the terminal. I have only 1 user. tried to type the wvdialconfig/etc/wvdial.config but i get a message saying bash: no such file exists or something or the other.

Doesn't your modem have an Ethernet port? USB modem support (Atleast of Indian ISPs) is not that good really in Linux. Connect it over the ethernet and get rid of all such hassles, thats the only thing I recommend.

No it doesn't have an Ethernet port. the modem, is connected to the phone line through ethernet ports, but it connects to my computer through a USB port.
So there's nothing I can do, but change my modem? aw crap.
