i have a laptop and a desktop(both HP). i want to do networking between the two . which wires would i need and the steps to do it.

RJ-45 cables with the plaugs ofcrse and jus connect it to the RJ-45 port of both

i got a cable like the one spashy said with my mtnl broadband connection. can i use that?
i connected that mtnl one between the two. but it din't detetct only. i think i need some other cable.

Its better to use wireless card , It is like a LAN card , you just have to attache to your desktop computer so that you can also use your laptop without connecting any kind of cable. You can make wireless connection between your desktop computer and Laptop

LAN Cable (RJ-45) wud cost you max. 30 bucks , you can get it in any PC peripheral shop.
