Default Problem with installing 2 LAN cards

I have an internet connection that I access thorugh a LAN card. I added a second LAN card to transfer files from a laptop. Now I can't access the internet through either card. If I remove the second card, the net works fine. Please tell me how I can have 2 LAN cards in my system without the internet access being disrupted.

The less technical answer would be to use the lan card for the internet connection to transfer data from the laptop.
The problem could be with the IP settings. What are the IPs for the cards?

i have a system that works with four lan cards ( as a router, firewall) so no problems just set the ip to fall in diffrent subnets and configure the default GW to be the IP where the net is connected every thing will work.
