I would say dell. They offer greater VFM, more options and good support.

If you are purchasing a high end laptop, then buy Dell, with your eyes closed. No one can beat or even match their config or price or onsite warranty.

But for your case, I would suggest that you compare both and take a call based on the following points.

1. If you are comparing both brands (same ditto config) then give additional weightage to look & feel factor (HP wins here)

2. Warranty - is it 1 yr or 3 yrs, does it cover international warranty and accidental damage? (I know for sure that Dell XPS comes with this by default but for Inspiron 1420 you might have to pay additional amount for Complete Cover)

3. HP has this feature called LightScribe, but Dell does not.

4. Type of warranty - Dell provides onsite warranty, but it takes a minimum of 30-45 minutes wait time on the phone to reach a technician, and another 24-48 hours for the technician to reach your place. There are no service centers. Wheras, HP has carry in service centers where you can take it immediately and get them started on the work. Minor issues will be fixed on the spot. Reduced downtime with HP.

5. VFM - This is something we can comment on, when you post the exact config and prices (incl of tax) for both the models. If you get hold of a Dell employee, then buy it through EPP (you dont even need to look at other brands then )

Good luck!
