Default Weird GPRS Connectivity

I am currently using an old SE k700i. And i am on Airtel Kerala. For the past two weeks, i see that the phone automatically connects to the GPRS network. I have enabled GSM only in my phone (Menu-->Connectivity-->Data Comm.-->Preferred Service-->GSM only), yet i find the phone automatically connected. Why is that so? Any ideas? Is there any way to find whether what is happening in the background?

Replies Appreciated

That wont matter. Check for a setting called Gprs Connection to when needed and not when available.

LOL! No such setting is available in SE phones.

cool_techie_tvm, it doesn't matter. The phone isn't exactly connected to the gprs. It is just showing that gprs is available on your network.

If the GPRS is available on the network, the part above the signal bar lights up. But i find the "globe" icon, and it means the phone is transferring GPRS data. The "globe" icon comes only data is being transferred. Isnt it so?
