Post Slick Review - A must have for chat freaks

Slick Review

For a chat freak like me a messenger on my mobile is a must. But due to unavailability of good messenger for my mobile, I was thrown in a hunt for the best messenger for s60 v3.

My hunt began with shifting from java clients like ebuddy, mig33,IM+, morange etc. These are good softwares, but they were missing in some important features which I will tell you in a while.

Finally I came across a software named slick from lonely cat games. It is available for both s60 v2, s60 v3,windows mobile & symbian UIQ. It is still in beta & the latest version is 0.42, which I am going to test.

Get Slick

Interface : The UI of Slick is a typical lonely cat games style. It resembles windows 98. The default font size is very small but it can be changed via the configuration menu. Also you can change the colour of different elements of the UI. The interface is a perfect balance of simplicity yet giving total overview of the features to the advanced user.

Chat experience : In this area no other clients even comes close. The chat window is two pane similar to the one seen on pc version of messengers. You can directly start typing the text. The smileys of yahoo are too good. The most impressive part is they even animate as the pc counterpart. There is also a provision to copy text from the chat pane, a feature unseen in any other client. Slick also incorporates 'Buzz' called as 'Nudge'. When anyone sends you a buzz the chat window vibrates just like the one on pc with a beep sound.

The features don't end here, the software also allows you to send file to yahoo contacts. You get a prompt when someone sends you a file asking you to accept or deny. Then there is a progress bar which shows how much the transfer is complete. I think slick was made with yahoo in mind, it enjoys a great Yahoo ! compatibility. Chatting on other protocols will be good seeing the yahoo chat. I tried Google talk but it does not let you send file which is bad. Slick also archives your chats, so you can read them later. But be careful as this will eat up your precious memory. Other positives include low memory consumption. Slick only consumes a measly 2 mb of your phone's RAM. This is good as you can multi-task as you chat.

Pros :

1) Feature rich messenger
2) Consumes very low memory

Cons :

1) Google talk looses connection to server randomly.
2) Google talk does not allows file transfer.
3) Application crashes randomly.
4) UI looks ancient, could have been better.

Conclusion : Slick is the best messenger for your mobile. I havent seen such a feature rich chat client which gives you the ultimate chat experience on your mini pc. Being a beta release, you can expect the crashing issues to be solved in the final release. This is the big daddy of all mobile messengers. A must have for every chat freak.

My Rating : 8/10

Tt's damn good. But it will be tough to get hold of it once it comes out of beta.

@ Pathik

I agree with you. Yeah it's awesome IM but when it will release a official version, LCG will charge for it. I think so, bcoz no software from LCG are free. Slick is free bcoz it's BETA version.

Yes, know the LCG team.
But I don't mind paying for these softs.
LCG developers always come with great softwares which stand out of the crowd with unique features.
Xplore, Profimail etc all are just damn good.
