Default Nokia Announces Seven Handsets for Emerging Markets

From a press event in New Delhi, India today, Nokia has announced seven new handsets that cater to emerging markets and developing nations. Nokia, along with Motorola, has shown a lot of initiative in bringing low-cost handsets into these markets, and has proven today that an ultra-low price point and good design do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Working from the bottom up, the Nokia 1200 and 1208 are simple bar-style handsets that feature quite an interesting feature: a multi-user phonebook. Designed for handset sharing amongst a village, up to five users can have their own list of contacts on the handset. The 1200 and 1208 also have a flashlight feature, with the 1200 having a monochrome screen and the 1208 boasting a color display. The Nokia 1650 is very similar to these handsets, but also features MP3 ringtone support.

The first of the folder style handsets announced is the 2505, and is arguably the most attractively designed handset of the bunch. Building on the features of the aforementioned handsets, the CDMA capable 2505 ups the screen to a larger 65k color unit, though like all but the 1200 and 1208, looses the multi-user phonebook. The Nokia 2660 shares similar features to the 2505, but is a GSM device, and includes GPRS data and Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

At the top of the pile of handsets announced today are the Nokia 2630 and 2760, the former a bar style design with the latter being a folder, include all previous features including GPRS data and Bluetooth, but also have VGA resolution cameras. FM radios are also present in both handsets....
