What's the use of mobile Unlock Softs

I have lots of mobile unlocking softs, for all brands and all phones. but i dont know whats the use of it. can i try them with my phone? will it damage the phone ? please

they r used to unlock diff features.....
for example if u hav forgotten lock code etc.....
network unlock codes r used to unlock a fone from a specific network....

i went to u.s. brought a tmobile simlocked nokia ngage qd
now when i come to india i will use my regular hutch airtel sim cards wich the fone wont accept
to make the fone accept those cards u have to unlock them and the process is unlockin
