have you tried any other launcher? try clearing cache by using an app 1tapcleaner from market.
if you are ready to root you can solve this slowdown. this is the second time i am reading about slowdown in 24hrs.

I'm not sure what launcher is. Can you give more details? I will try out the app you mentioned.
I don't think I'm comfortable rooting my phone.

GO Launcher. try this. it'll replace the LG Home screen with its own icons.

Also one more query my friend has HTC hero which has a pretty old version of Android. Can he update it to a later android?
Currently its 2.1 v

no. Android 2.1 is max officially. though unofficially it might have already received ICS (Android 4.0).

What is the purpose of this launcher applications? Do the make interface etc easier and better looking or they help in minimum usage of resources?
Also can someone please tell me what GPS is and how it is useful? Sorry for being a noob.
Go launcher didn't help much with the performance.

Gps is global positioning system... Its tells your location via satellite... Google it for more info...
