Default Google Android vs Apple iOS: Discussion

Own an iPhone or a Droid, then let us know what you think about it

This thread is to share your experience with your mobile devices running either on Android or iOS; any version from the oldest Android G1 or the iPhone to the newest of devices.

The word of importance here is "user experience"
• The idea of this thread is to give an insight into the opposite worlds. This is to see the end user experience of using the Android and iOS.
This not to argue about which one is better. Constructive arguments can be done. No bashing each other.

The entire thread is about this one query:
Tell us about your device. What you like and dislike about your phone?
• If you own an Android phone, the talk about what you like in it, how it can be improved and what more would you like to see in your device. Same goes for the iPhone.

• If you own an Android then talk about android only. Same with the iPhone. If you own both or have switched form one to another then you may speak about the strengths and weaknesses of either. Do not talk about the device which you have not owned or used for a minimum of a month. (Used my friends iPhone for 15mins doesn't count as owning)

Pointers: WHAT NOT TO DO
Spoiler:

~ Keep a healthy discussion.
~ Do not argue since. You might find supporters but the person you are arguing against has nothing to gain from it and at the end of it, you too.
~ Make suitable points and avoid flaming
~ Do not talk about Steve Jobs or Larry Page. They have nothing to do with you, trust me.
~ Do not talk about "who copied whom" etc since no one is listening and you have nothing to gain or lose if someone copied something. There are courts in EU etc who would entertain you but here its all going to hit a wall.
~ Do not talk about benchmarks or specs on sheet. Talk about usability and smoothness of the UI instead, or whether your device lags.
~ Do not talk about litigation or patents etc.

In simple words: Just talk about the phone in hand and nothing else.

NO

What you should talk about:
~ Do you like your phone?
~ Do you want to switch to another OS?
~ Would you recommend it to others?
~ What problems have you faced while using it? Service history, damage repair costs, broken speakers etc
~ Is any feature missing form the phone you are using? (not comparative, something that you need but isn't there)
~ Is there any particular feature you want to talk about that you find interesting or has helped you immensely?
~ How are the basic features of the phone; call, messages, reception, notifications etc?
~If you have outlived a device then how long did your phone last (before it died)?

• People who use both iPhones and Androids are pretty happy with their devices as shown by the consistent sales of each. I have seen there is a gross misunderstanding of the end user experience provided by either with most discussions stuck at "specifications on paper" ,"hardware prowess" or "cost" etc completely ignoring "real world usage", "build quality", "usability" etc.
A lot of people speak about the iphone without owning one and vice versa. Avoid this.

• Pure hardware benchmarks are available from better capable authors in Cnet, GSMarens and the likes. Only post your experience here.

A lot of people may not be able to use both the OSes due to various factors, especially cost. Give your views in such a way that a person is able to see what the iPhone or Android experience is like.

Keep the discussion healthy and let us know what you love about your device

Its going to be a fruitful thread for many guys or specially users have little or no experiences of iOS or Android...

------------
As far as Android is concerned i have used Samsung 551(Froyo installed) only.
Before taking it i was very excited about having an android phone but after using it i felt that :
- One should take a phone having higher possible resolution in his/her budget. Very first day i was disappointed seeing its pixelated screen bcoz i was comparing it's display with my brother's Nokia 5235.

- I felt that 3.2" display is not enough for most of the usages esp. web browsing.

- if your mobile facilitates capacitive touch then qwerty keyboard(slider keyboard or such hardware keypad) is useless.
- One should learn all the ways to save the battery(by turning unnecessary stuffs off or such thing) to the maximum extent otherwise u'll search for AC Power outlet very frequently.

- Android is really a smart OS. If offers u to customize almost everything u need to.

- By downloading various apps from Android market you really find new ways to keep urself entertained everyday. (There were some apps which really made me feel happy for choosing android)
--------------
I've faced restarting problem mostly while browsing web, don't know its hardware problem or software but that was not so frequent so ignored it.

I liked my phone but is not completely satisfied with the hardware so planning to get another having better specs(but it'll be only and only Android).
I'll definitely recommend Android as a OS for phone. For such a user who've tried only Symbian(Nokia) devices its like whole new thing.

For iPhone i've only one sentence "for most people its too pricey to even try it out"

Galaxy S2-Hate 1.The battery life 2.Poor audio 3. battery life again
Like-Everything else.(Not talking about the millions of apps, most are useless anyways)

This is my last Android unless the battery issue is resolved.
I really do not care about custom ROMs,multitasking and things like that.
Good battery back up is absolutely mandatory for a mobile phone
If Apple can do it with ip4 more than a year ago,why can`t Android do it now?

I am using Android only so no idea about iPhone OS. Android is good as whatever application I want, is present in Android Market. Also, it is user friendly atleast for me.

Currently I am using Ipod-touch with IOS-5....and the thing i like about it is
-unbeatable sound quality(as what it is known for)
-Smooth UI
-bright colors
-Good quality apps(graphics wise)
-Smooth animations

Things that i don't like
-Requires itunes for transferring media and apps
-Less free apps
-less media codec support
-no flash support(anyways its gonna be ruled out soon because of HTML5 )
-no expandable memory

Battery life is an issue for every smartphone in general. Not specific to Android. Have used an iPhone 4 for a few weeks, think it was 10-15% better what I currently get in my stock SGS2 atm, but that's that. Now iPhone 4S users have also joined the Android club as far as complaining about battery life is concerned.

Find me an iOS app for this, I'll be thankful. My cousin's iPad 2 won't be a waste.
Spoiler:

All one needs to do is, http://192.168.1.100:8081 (phone's LAN IP and webserver port) and one can access the files saved in the htdocs folder.

Flash is the cross-platform way to broadcast live streams/sports matches. iOS can't do it for me. (I know Adobe has ditched Flash) I've watched many F1 GPs and football matches on my Android.

In my house, we have 2 Androids (LG Optimus One and Samsung Galaxy SL), 1 iPhone (3GS), 1 WP7 (Samsung Focus), 1 Symbian S60 (Nokia 5233).

My personal phone is the LG Optimus One... its a cheap basic smartphone with good capabilities, especially after I have flashed custom ROMs and optimized kernals.

LG Optimus One

I feel the experience is decent for the price I have paid for it. Good browser, good music player, average camera... Never had lags in games or usage (thanks to CM7).

Hardware is flaky... Don't like it... Might have to spend a lot more money if I want a decent hardware. Had some problems with USB port... it got solved automatically. Then there was some problem of shorting in the earphone jack... but I found out it was because of a drop of water, and once the water dried, it was good...

My main problem is battery life. The drain is heavy when I use the phone. LG's ROMs are crappy as hell. Custom ROMs have helped a lot, but still not satisfactory...

Overall, for 10k, it was a good deal. Not any more, because soon there will be better phones at that price...

Samsung Galaxy SL

Samsung Galaxy SL, on the other hand, is very powerful. Have not installed custom ROMs on it though... It is easily twice as powerful as my Optimus One. I had bought it @18.6k. Screen is good, touch response is good, processor is powerful, camera is good...

But Samsung's ROM is bloody buggy... really dislike it. Have been using Go Launcher Ex on it, and it has helped usability a lot. Overall, if you can get this phone for 15k, its well worth the money spent. I wish I could installed custom ROMs on it to exponentially improve its performance, but I cannot take the risk as its not mine...

iPhone 3GS

Had bought it @20k less than a year ago... Excellent phone... Good battery life, good camera, good overall performance... Still, I prefer Android. Its missing a few features like Wifi Hotspot. iTunes is a pain to use... No plug and play... Still, one of the best phones out there even though officially its 2 years old...

Samsung Focus

Had got this one some time back from EBay @13k... Awesome phone... super fast, excellent touchscreen, beats all the other phones in my inventory hands down... SuperAmoled screen is awesome, smooth UI, excellent browser, good media player, superb camera with flash... For 13k in the black market, its a steal. I understand I won't be getting any warranty, but for the price, its worth the risk... Easily beats any 25k phone hands down...

Its missing a ton of features... But for a normal user, this phone is a god-sent... Very pleased with it... Excellent Facebook and Twitter integration, superfast camera, 25GB SkyDrive cloud space, voice recognition on par with Android...

Negatives are very few FREE Apps... Even simple games cost 3 USD... Rooting or enabling hidden features like HotSpot functionality is a pain... I couldn't do it... Its too tough... Not a developer friendly phone...

Overall Impressions
Nothing can beat Android in overall goodness... Tons of features, easy to sideload apps, and average overall. Newer Android phones will definitely be better than what I have experienced with my entry-level phones...

My next phone should be the Galaxy Nexus some time in the next 6-8 months...

You know I really cant vote in the poll.
As a overall OS iOS feels better to use and is more polished. But Android for unknown reasons felt a bit easier to use.
I love the home screen of Android and also the drop down Notification bar(which iOS just got recently)

Would really want Google to develop a iTunes type software. But not lock the phone to sync songs, etc. Just as a alternate(Apple has ruined me).

Finally, after thinking a bit more. I have voted for Android. But is not inferior in any sense. Its just that Android feels better. We have to always navigate too many Menus in the iOS just to start the Wi-Fi(dont know 100% if iOS 5 has changed this)

Android is simpler to use.

I've had the weird privilege of owning both the top end iOS device and the bottom end Android device (see my siggy). My observation in a nutshell: Android any day beats iOS. Comparing them feels like comparing those old Nokia S60 and S40 phones. Android simply is the better OS.

BTW note that I am comparing the operating systems and not the hardware of my 7k phone against my 30k tablet
