Default Help regarding Sony Ericsson K508i

Yep... just got hold of a new cell phone.

It has an infrared port for exchange of data to and from between the phone and other devices. Now I don't have a laptop(I know that laptops have infrared ports) and I don't have an infrared port on my PC.

Can I manage to set-up an infrared port on my PC? If yes, then how do I do that?

Sorry, if this query has been raised before.

MODS: If you think this is the wrong section for asking about infrared ports... you can move this thread to the appropriate section. Thanks!

Yes, you can set up an infrared port on your PC easily. Infrared Adapters can be bought from any Computer shop for Rs.500 approx. Most connect to the USB port of the computer. Use the installation instructions that come with it.

You can either opt for an Infra-Red port costing around 250-300 Rs. or opt for a third party Data Cable (USB) which retails for around 300-350 Rs.

For setting up InfraRed, you need to be careful, as In INDIA, mostly IR ports from BAFO are available, whose drivers havenot undergone WINXP LOGO testing and can cause quite a headache to setup.

I would advise you to go for the USB Data Cable. Though it is a little expensive, there are added benifits like - you can charge the battery using the cable, Data transfer rates are better than when using the IR port.

However if you want to go for Original SE Datacable, it will set you back by a cool Rs.1500 & the IR port costs around Rs. 1100/-

Thank you for your help.

I ended up buying a USB cable which costed me 500 bucks.
