Its been 6 months since its release....now that means 6 month old tech

I would suggest to wait for N900 upgrade..with updated maemo interface

Just wait for Mobile World Congress (MWC 2010) which will take place soon.
We can expect lots of new tech and mobiles there

umm. I feel that the snapdragon phones like HD2, Nexus One, SE Xperia X10 took a giant leap over N900. better wait for the next version of N900.

^^^ the benefit of HD2 is that it'll get the WinMo 7 upgrade once its released.
I've personally used the N900, and believe me its one hell of a phone.
If ur good with Linux u'll love the phone.

There are few areas where N900 lags behind competition

1) Resistive Touch
2) application availability
3) No portrait mode which means one hand operation is very difficult

App availability is the biggest deal breaker. Compared to Android, winmo and iphone OS 3.1, the apps that are available on this phone are nothing.

My suggestion is to look for these phones instead:

1) Palm Pre (multitasking genius and superb in gaming)
2) HTC HD2 (breathtaking UI and genius design)
3) iphone 3GS (apps and it's fast, UI needs no introduction)
4) HTC Hero (22k price, total VFM and sense UI rocks)

Default Re: Hey guyz...........is Nokia N900 worth waiting ??

reviews are pretty good for the Nokia. Only thing from my side is that it ia touch bulky. But in terms of features its probably a total knockout. But then it would be interesting to get it face off with the hd2 and the google nexus 1. Although nokia will gain the upper hand in terms of the qwerty keyboard .

But there are some interesting and niggling issues with the Nokia n900
1. The ui works only in landscape mode (weird)
2. Limited 3rd party apps
3. No smart dialing (come on even windows phones have that!!)
4. No voice recorder, no MMS, and no handwriting recognition (guess somebody is sleeping in the product dept)
5. No FM radio application (despite that the hardware's there)(not that blackberry users will mind...lol no offense meant)

Note: Credit to GSM Arena for the review of the Nokia n900...

But then its plus points far far far outweigh its minuses which are
  • 3.5" 16M-color resistive touchscreen of WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) resolution
  • Maemo 5 OS
  • State-of-the-art Mozilla-based web browser with Adobe Flash 9.4 support
  • Slide-out three-row full QWERTY keyboard
  • ARM Cortex A8 600MHz CPU, PowerVR SGX graphics accelerator; 256 MB of RAM
  • Quad-band GSM and tri-band 3G support
  • 5 MP autofocus camera with dual-LED flash and active camera lens cover
  • WVGA (848 x 480 pixels) video recording @ 24fps
  • 10 Mbps HSDPA and 2 Mbps HSUPA support
  • Wi-Fi and GPS with A-GPS
  • 32GB onboard storage
  • DivX and XviD video playback
  • Foldable kickstand
  • microSD card slot with microSDHC support
  • Built-in accelerometer
  • Proximity sensor
  • 3.5 mm audio jack and TV-out
  • FM Radio receiver, FM transmitter
  • microUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth v2.1
  • Solid audio quality
  • Kinetic scrolling
  • Contacts integration of Skype, Google Talk and other VoIP services
  • Great build quality
Phew....guess its targeted at the netbook lugging crowd really... so i ask the question is the nokia n 900 better than the netbooks??

All in all seems a really nice peice of tech to own..Only thing is do you really need or use all that gagetry anyway?...but then i would buy it for a big ego boost

Note:credits to gsm arena for the review

I seriously don't think that Nokia N900 lags behind in terms of 3rd party applications. Those guys exaggerated IMHO, but yea, in terms of availibility. It still lags behind.

You've got Gnumeric for spreadsheets and Abiword for Word processing. It uses Fennec (Firefox for mobiles) for web browsing and can run Flash.

Mplayer has also been ported to it. It also has DivX and XviD playback.

I would prefer Maemo over Android (as an OS) anyday, considering Maemo is actually Linux. It is based on Debian, runs X server, has a Package manager.

There are good repositories for more applications. Heck, you can even run an Apache webserver on it.

I think you should try it yourself and then go for it.
