ipod nano is junk. You better look for these:

1) Cowon D2+
2) Creative Zen X-Fi
3) Samsung YP-T3.

for ipods, I would pick ipod touch for 10k approx.

explain what do u mean by junk?
only criticism against ipods was its average sound quality. But all ipods from 2008 onwards have very good SQ

@TS
if you want compact player with great SQ and few extras(5g has VGA video recording) go for nano

otherwise if you can spend some extra bucks go for ipod touch-Ultimate PMP,Wifi, iphone OS,huge collection of apps. Its a pocket computer

^^you should try other players to know what ipod nano lacks. I am a big fan of ipod touch but ipod nano and shuffle are totally not worth money. With minimal sync options and minimal audio/video codec support, I don't think it's a good buy.

cowon D2+ and creative zen pawn it and their price is lower. And also, you can use tens of music organizers to sync music to these two devices.

cowon D2+ is the best sounding player and also has superb display that plays crisp audio files and it support huge list of audio formats.

as far as audio formats are concerned ipod supports all major codecs except wma.I dont think its huge problem because 99 percent files are mp3 anyway

D2+ lacks aac and more importantly GAPLESS PLAYBACK means there will be some lag between 2 tracks which is big minus with D2+

The problem with video on the D2+ is that the supported formats (AVI and WMV sized at 320x240) aren't as common on the web as the H.264/MPEG files that are standard for most video podcasts and work natively on the iPod and Zune. More often than not, you'll need to convert video to play on the D2+

As far as sound quality is concerned both are above average.I think choice is subjective because both have different signatures.Ipod is cleaner, natural and more balanced.D2+ is more tweaked, better equalizer, fun to listen with little bass roll off and more hiss than nano.

nano has extras like cover flow, genius,VGA video recording, much better UI etc
D2+ is twice heavy and thrice thick compared to nano

those who complain about "FM Radio" in Ipod get satisfied with Nano 5G.

For me Video Recording with Ipod complete BS...Are we all don't have the Video (rec) capable phone ?

Storage is not upgraded, 8/16 gb will only available, 32gb nano will seducing for me though.(being 3g 8GB nano owner)

But I will wait for next year at that time 64GB/128 GB Ipod Touch is main stream.

Shocked to see no FM radio in Touch!!!!!!!!.

whoa!!!!

you say:
D2+ and ipod are above average. (though half of the statement it true)
ipod supports all formats except wma
AVI is not as common as H.264
ipod sound is cleaner, balanced and more natural.

ROFLMAO!!!

every sane person ridicules ipod for not generating clean and balanced sound.

This explains everything. Now, Here is what I feel.

1) Display, cowon D2's 2.5" 16M touch display pwns nano's 2.2" display
2) Battery life: cowon d2 give 52hr audio and 10hr video time. for ipod, that's a dream
3) audio: D2 has the best audio quality in PMPs and it is far far better than that on ipod nano. am still laughing when you said that it's quality is comparable to nano and average
4) Memory expansion. if you feel that the inbuild storage is not enough, just insert a SDHC card and you get extra space
5) MSC/MTP: no need to depend on itunes. you can either drag and drop or use any media client in any OS, be it linux or windows.
6) support for FLAC. this is considered as one of the best audio formats for music. try this on a good set of headphones and keep drooling. AAC cannot even touch the quality that FLAC/OGG can attain.
7) 76mW max output that can drive every single premium full size headphone without dropping a sweat
8) it may be bulky but beats nano in every department.
8) custom equalizer, clarity, bass, 3D, stereo enhance, MP enhance and many more audio setting mean that you can setup the exact audio effect that your ear likes. Now, I think this one is much more useful than gapless playback and you think that lack of gapless is a BIIIG problem?? lol.
9) genius playlist, well. let me see what it generates for tamil, hindi and telugu songs. hahaha.
10) coverflow and UI: my D2's touch navigation pawns ipod nano's coverflow and UI. No need for me to keep rotating my thumb in circles if I have a thousand song playlist to go to middle of playlist. One single touch in the middle of scroll bar and I land right at the center of playlist. Too much for coverflor and super UI. right?

I had been an ipod nano user for 3yrs. During the first two years of ipod nano usage, I used to think that nano was the best music player ever made, till I heard audio on Creative Zenvision:W. Even Transcend T.Sonic 610 gave much better audio than my ipod nano when I hooked them to ATP3 and played same song. And then I bought cowon D2.

Here is my review on Cowon D2:

http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/show...95#post1045295 (part 1)
My Extensive Cowon D2 review part 2 (part 2)

Here is cowon D2 upgraded to D2+ firmware:

Look at the detail that the "Now Playing" screen gives. here is the advanatage of this screen:

I recently buy a new Rock album but when I start playing that songs, I feel that there is too much bass. Now, I just look at the now playing screen and see that the M3B is set to high value. I go to settings menu, lower the bass and save the profile.

now thats predudice, because your 3 old ipod nano does not have good sound
quality you assume 4g and 5g nano does not have good SQ.Its not just you ,there are many people say that ipods have bad SQ(especially Apple haters). All ipods from 2008 onwards have far superior SQ and RMAA test proves that.Apple never make fuzz about improved SQ in their feature list(try ipod touch 1g vs 2g,ipod nano 2g,3g vs nano 4g in both cases newer models due to better sound chip sounds far better than their predecessor)

btw i never said ipod supports all formats except wma,i said ipod supports ALL MAJOR codecs except WMA.As far as FLAC is concerned i dont think any normal human being can differentiate between 320 kb MP3 and FLAC with the kind of headphones they use.

^^oh, btw, I also tested the 4th gen and 3rd gen nano and the SQ improvment is minimal and still lags far behind cowon D2. ipod touch 2nd gen is an exception though.

btw, even a 1200 rupee earphone/headphone can clearly show difference between FLAC and mp3.

here is my request. please use a quality headphones/earphones with ipod and then try the same on cowon D2. try to play with D2's settings and then you will notice what ipod lacks.

also, don't think of me as apple anti-fanboy. I still recommend ipod touch (only ipod touch) if the buyer has 10k+budget.

it's just that ipod nano is not worth the money when compared to zen or D2 or walkman series.

dude i own ep-630 and senheiser HD 202.I have also used my friends much expensive shure SE530 ( which costs over 27000/- and considered as one of best IEM ) for over 2 months

i have tried d2 head to head with touch. And touch head to head with nano.My impression i have already posted above.

"Ipod (both touch and nano) is cleaner, natural and more balanced.D2+ is more tweaked, better equalizer, fun to listen with little bass roll off and more hiss than ipod "

also D2 hiss more than both ipods

well thats my personal opinion

here is RMAA test result of d2

http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ad.php?t=39435

see how poor lower frequency response is ( below 30 mark)

here is RMAA test result of Apple product

http://www.gsmarena.com/apple_iphone...view-369p6.php

see the flawless frequency response of ipod touch 2g and nano 4g have nearly similar graphs.See the comparison in GSM arena( i would provide link of RMAA of ipod nano if you want)

here is part sound quality of 9 page review of nano 5g

"Sonically, the fifth-generation iPod nano is completely up to snuff with the fourth-generation model, the second-generation iPod classic, as well as the iPhone 3GS, all of which have almost completely eliminated low-level hissing noises from their amplifiers, creating cleaner-sounding audio that’s as close to audiophile-quality as any iPod we’ve previously tested. Even when using $1300 earphones to listen to the latest Beatles album remasters, which were given a fine-tooth combing for sonic imperfections by their producers, the fifth-generation iPod nano produced legitimately wonderful, “no complaints” sound on its default equalizer setting. We got lost in the music and really didn’t want to give up listening in order to write about it, consistently great performance that really kicked in across the family starting with last year’s models. "

http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/rev...-generation/P5

you can also read review of nano 4g which has same SQ as 5g

btw this thread has become more like fight club and its good time pass! lol

Look at this: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-12519_7-9968448-49.html

check which are at no.2, no.4. But when I compare sansa clip with cowon D2 or ipod, it's just flat sounding.

here is what cnet says about these tests:

# It's misleading.

When we talk about "audio quality," most people assume we mean how pleasing something sounds to your ear. Unfortunately, our tests don't measure how pleasant an MP3 player audio chip sounds, but how accurately it performs. Paradoxically, not all accurate players sound great, and some of our favorite-sounding MP3 players have a few technical shortcomings.

Also, as I said (and am getting tired of saying this), cowon D2 comes to life if you customize the audio settings.

try this. listen to any song at zero customization on D2 and while the song is playing, load the profile with the following settings:

equalizer: rock
BBE: 3
mach2bass: 5
stereo enhancer: 2
MP enhance: yes

and you will notice the difference.

now, coming to ilounge review:

creating cleaner-sounding audio that’s as close to audiophile-quality as any iPod we’ve previously tested.

wow. if they don't know that pervious ipod nanos and first gen ipod touch sucked in audio quality, obviously, they won't notice the difference.

dude previously tested audiophile ipod means they are talking about 4g nano,2g ipod touch and classic 2008. They do know previous ipod nano(2007 and before and touch 1g did not sound well and they have mentioned in their previous reviews.

and i would never use any kind of effect while listening to music, because they alter music characteristics eg If you use bass boost you will compromise treble.I like to music in its original balanced form.Having said that its nice to have these effects and good customizable equalizer(something which ipods lacks) because many people like to tweak music

^^hmm. yes. I agree that bass boost will compromise treble. What if you have the freedom of improving both bass and treble and that too only to extent that you need and also change every band of equalizer so that you get the sound that you want but with no loss in balance. That is what I am trying to say when I am referring to D2. if you feel that the lows are not good, tweak the equalizer, increase BBE and decrease Mac2bass.
