+1 for HP Dv9000t. Better upgrade the RAM to 1gig. vista will crawl on 512mb ram

Either take the HP with additional RAM or customize Dell Inspiron 6400, not this one according to your budget. You can save some money by asking dell not to install the OS, they charge you for that.

Also, the HP has a really low resolution for a 17inch notebook. It normally starts at 1680*1050 and goes upto 1920*1200. I've seen 15inch notebooks with 1920*1200...
And yes, the Core Duo/Core 2 Duo thing...although, Its not that big a difference in real world performance, maybe 10-15%

IMA 950 got 170 points 3DMark2006.
