Ask your brother to carry it for you from US. Go for dell. Any model will cost as less as half the price than in India.
ps - take 3 yrs warranty (some 220$ extra). So that you can get their at-home service even in India (confirm this with dell US before purchasing). But its more than worth. It still becomes a cheaper deal than buying it from India. Buying from dell, US you will get - For 40 to 50K (depending on the model)- the latest core duo laptop with 1GB RAM/120gb Hard disk/dvd burner/3 yrs warranty and at-home service. For your use, I suggest you to go for 14 inch dell e1405 model. But thats my personal suggestion. Ask few more before making decision. Dell is offering free vista OS upgrade. But prefereably ask them to install win XP only.
