Partitioning Laptop's HDD

hello, i have one query.....
i want to create linux partition on the hard disk of a compaq laptop (compaq pressario 2214).
currently it has a single partition of 38GB.
i used partition magic v8 for resizing partition but, it exits with error code 983.

Error 983: "Too many errors found, process halted"

The support site says this
* In Windows 9x/Me, run ScanDisk.
* In Windows NT/2000/XP, run CHKDSK /F

but, i just want to know first that
is it possible to create more than one partitions on that laptop?
has anybody tried successfully?

partitions do not require specific hardwars or a desktop
u got an hdd ? got space?
u can partition it
ir partition magic isnt workin and u want only linux u can just boot from the cd and let the installation handle the partitioning

why don't u just format ur laptop and make new partitions manually instead of using COMPAQ recovery CD. Install Linux into seprate partition after windows and use GRUB or LILO as boot loader.

P.S. i have nvr used laptop but i don't think there is any basic diffrence other than size and components.

no change in hardware specs

i own a toshiba notebook and i ahve succesfully created 4 partitions on a 40 GB harddisk.

i have grub as loader and run red hat 9 and win xp using powerquest partition magic!!!

i think that ur hard disk has some bad clusters!!!

try runnin scandisk!!!!

Follow these steps:-
1]Run ScanDisk in thorough mode in Win98,in XP run ChkDSk,with AutoFix errors.
2]Then in Partition Magic,use the option Resize or Split Partition option to create a new drive.Then format it in EXT2 format type.Then Save the changes.
3]Install Linux in that partition.

i think there is no need to use partition magic ... just boot fro ur LINUX cd and follow the steps ... and make partions according to ur desire

i don't have time for backup, format
i'll check but as its a new one,
there is a rare chance of having errors

so if the pm8 won't work,
i think i'll directly try for linux installation

format is the last resort 8)

i just wanted to confirm that is it possible on that laptop
