Default Want free Forum

Hi,

I want to create my own personal online forum. But i dont have the money for investing in it right now. Can somebody tell me whether i can have an online forum free of charge .... just like we have online web hosting by angelfire, geocities...... Please help me out......

Also if i want to invest in my personal forum... what all is needed... disk space etc and how much will it cost..... Can i register my URL and get it redirected to a machine at my home so i can use my hard disk space for the forum.

I am a newbie and hence kindly guide me with details and not jargon.....

Thnks in advance

Free forum softwares :
Invision power board: (IPB)
It's 1.3v full is free but it's latest version 2.XX is not free, but we have get 2.0 version trial free with some restrictions. Even it got hacks and mods...

SMF (simple machine forum) board :
It's totally free to use. The mods are also very easy to install. But i personally don't like it's interface.

Looks and interface:
IPB > vB > SMF

Features:
vB> SMF > IPB

Cost:
SMF > IPB > vB

Hmm.. u cant host or use your hard disk space.. u need a webspace. Take some free webspace from dhost or ecwhost and some free URL redirection thing like .co.nr or .c-o.in like that.

So, it's totally free
Free webspace : dhost or ecwhost
Free forum : IPB
Free URL redirection: Co.nr, .c-o.in or .dk.

.
IPB 2.0.0 is completely free. IPB went paid from v 2.0.1. So, if you can grab a working copy of 2.0.0 from somewhere, you can use it legally... But remember, only 2.0.0 is free... using IPB 2.0.1 without paying is illegal....

Also, ASP based forum software kick some PHP a$$... but, most of them are paid...

A good free host which offers PHP (required for most forum board software) is http://www.dhost.info ; BTW, the software used to create this board is phpbb, which is also completely free, and among the best of forum boards. Another good (minimalistic) one is minibb.

Thank you all guys.... I am trying with phpBB. I wanna install it in my college lab of a demo forum. If it suceeds then i will probably port it to online server.. But porting online would be too costly......

Can i have a domain name register and then....redirect it to a dedicated server at my college lab...... is this possible ...?????

Also if possible then what would be the bandwidth required for such a connection..... Total strength of people using the forum would be around 300 initially.... assuming 4-5 concurent users at any given time.....

Also one more thing.... I want not only the forum but also the website to be located on a local server... help me out buddies...... i am a management student .... and this is a part of my IT project...
