If u r in X windows just configure your eternet card with the ip, subnet ,gateway and dns server. There you go for cable net all ready. You can configure the card in network settings -> ethernet. You will see your network card there and can configure it just like learning ABC...

To get on the net the things required are
1. Your IP given by provider
2. A network interface card
Ok now go to /etc/hosts enter the ip next enter the dns name in /etc/resolve do an ifconfig to see the ethernet connection is up and the right ip is reflected. go do a /etc/init.d/network restart after this you should be able to ping the dns if success you can brouse the net
else do a restart see the netstat -nr to see the route specified and there add a default route to eth0 this will do the trick
