Re: Master's in the US : A Guide
Hi!
I am currently a student of Class XI and My Aunt lives In US.
She applied for our Immigration way back in 1990s and the Application has Matured now. So we can avail a Green Card in 2-3 Months.
BUT
We are trying to delay it till i Complete my 12th from India and Then have a go at IITJEE. If i secure a good rank then i complete B.Tech from IIT and then pursue my Masters In US.
BUT
If i do not get good rank then i give SAT/TOEFL and then pursue higher studies in US.
So could you provide some info on That?

I'm sorry, I don't haf much info about SAT. If you want information about TOEFL you can check out the first part of the guide.
As for SAT, you can check out www.ets.org for official details. ETS is the organization which conducts exams like SAT, TOEFL, GRE etc.

BTW, you mentioned your experiences being "Good, Bad and Ugly" there right ? Care to give us a summary of each one of the three categories ?

In this economy I see it as an expensive business to pursue your Bachelors in the US unless you haf loads of cash to spend for the 4 year program. Hence, the question.

Hehe... nothing much... some horrible experiences at the airport, initial days of projects and some traffic (driving) tickets

1) It is the estimated net cost. It may vary from place to place, university to university and year to year.
2) I don't work on-campus but I guess you can earn anywhere from $150-400 a month depending on the job.
3) Not all internships are paid. Mine is; I can cover a semester's fees by working for 3 months.

What fees? Unless you get scholarship of some kind no fee is waived off. That depends entirely on the student, university [and the recession ]

If you are talking about on-campus jobs then NO, it won't be enough for paying your fees. It will probably suffice for your monthly expenses. Can't say for sure that too, since I don't work on-campus; but surely the part-time on-campus job can't satisfy the fee requirement.
At least in my university, the fees + university expenses come to about $11,000 per semester, while I believe working part-time on-campus one can earn about $300 per month.

Frankly, don't go with the masses and do a Masters in the 'most popular' or the 'best course'. Do what interests you. Masters outside India is very different from what you study there. If you don't like the course you gonna feel like committing suicide!!! [ok, thats probably a bit exaggerated... but you need to go with what interests you]. I did my bachelors in Electrical Engineering and now I'm doing my Masters in Computer Engineering specializing in Computer Microarchitecture.
Currently, the job market is very very bad... so it doesn't matter from what stream you graduate

ya I don't intend to go with the masses, am not dat type I know wat I was doing when I took CS for B.Tech, at dat time CS or IT didn't had this much boom in India. I asked like this as I dunno anything abt the education in U.S. All my frnds and family in U.S. are in medical related fields, so they are not much of a help...then the only courses I found interesting are Networking and MIT in Australian Universities, and since I hav interest in some serious programming I found MGP in some UK universities like Hull and Abertray interesting.
btw hw do u handle it?!!...u did bachelors in Electrical and now doing Masters in Computer Microarchitecture!!...it will be difficult to jump in to an entirely new stream, nah??!! :-P
So hw is this stream?? is it an electonics based subject or hardware based programming subject like we did some in CS bachelors course??
