It does read games pre recoreded DVD's ie Films, it reads dvd burnt on other machines and it reads all sorts of CD's. Wen i insert a a blank DVD of any kind the drive instantly turns from a DVD RAM into a cd drive on My computer. Any help anyone could suggest would be great and it show's Free space 0 and total size 0

Re: DVD writter not recognizing blank dvd's
Sony drives with NEC/Optiarc hardware suck, like the one you have now. Get it replaced, and if possible, from another brand.

Re: DVD writter not recognizing blank dvd's
Get another one.......I bought a Sony Optiarc writer with my new PC and had to get it replaces the next day but the replaced writer (this on is Sony too) is working nice and fine but I dont expect too much from it. Get a LG H55n or LiteOn LH-20-A1P writer .

Re: DVD writter not recognizing blank dvd's
a blank media shows 0 free and 0 total probably because there is no file system on it.....once u write some data on it gets a file system and then shows the actual data.......

Re: DVD writter not recognizing blank dvd's
ok, my suggestion because I faced same problem wih my ASUS burner gives same solution, of replacing the burner. But for one thing Blank DVDs show zero space only. You can check it in nero express there is an option called Disc Info which gives size of the disc and free area info.
2nd comes DMA reset for burner if it taking very long to burn dics
burning at 16x time taken to burn is 6.5-7 minutes
12x in 8.5-10 minutes
8x 13-16 minutes
These are normal timings compare with your timings
3rd is a precaution you need to take while burning DVDs, while burning a DVD it is recommended not to do anything else, it can cause problems which you are getting.
Multi-tasking should be avoided while burning discs. People will say no it does not effects, that is why I am telling this beforehand that this does.

Re: DVD writter not recognizing blank dvd's
if i read correctly..
you burn then fail
you burn then succeed..fine
you can read what you burnt..fine
then there are no issue...
and as said above..it is just the way it is supposed to be.

Re: DVD writter not recognizing blank dvd's
ok,
this is sort of bug in XP, when you have 2 optical drives.
Did you also get error "Incorrect Function" when you insert a blank CD/DVD and click on it????
The workaround is, 'right click' on that drive's icon go to "Recording" tab and check "Enable CD recording on this drive". (let the drive be automatically be selected, but you can change it if you wish).
Now this drive will show correct size of the disc inserted .
(but, at the same time, now(surprisingly!!) your other drive wont , thats why i call it as a bug )

Re: DVD writter not recognizing blank dvd's
Even I have a Sony DVD RW drive with the same problem as AYmn. it is the only single optical drive. I was not at home for last 2 years and nobody noticed the problem as no one else really use that machine. Any way now am totaly screwed. Since the Sony does not have any drivers for its DVD drives there is no software patch which can solve the problem. Never to sony again for any drives .

You can get firmwares from there. Both original and modified.
