What is this problem with my PC
My pc sometimes when switched on stops at the first screen showing the Motherboard manufacturer label.. Sometimes it goes further to boot in and then freezes at the
desktop screen .. What is this problem..?? This doesnt happen always but unfortunately for almost 85%of the time. Can anyone identify the problem and the solution?
BIOS label reports harddisk has some problem and needs to be replaced. But CHKDSK shows no problem. So I am not sure about it. By the way wish to know any free tool that can diagnose disk problems.??

Re: What is this problem with my PC
I Formatted my windows installation drive and after reinstallation it works
fine. No warning when booting in..
BUT..Again it freezes at times. I've seen this happening mostly when connected to net.
(os -win xp , RAM-2GB, Browser - Opera latest version)..
Anyone knows the solution..??

Re: What is this problem with my PC
Could also be a probme with SMPS.
I had a problem where windows used to crash whenever I connect extra fan to my desktop (side fan). That was after I added a new GPU. SMPS couldn't provide stable voltage to all the compnents and if I remove the extra fan, I used to get windows back.
Also check the IDE/SATA cables. A problem with the cable can't be ruled out.

Re: What is this problem with my PC
Had the same problem with a Friends PC... Just removed the Processor and Heatsink and put it back in and reset the BIOS via Jumper... That fixed it...

Re: What is this problem with my PC
Dear windchimes.
Well, AFAIK I had the same problem 4-5 years ago with my Pentium II machine. The problem was with the processor. It was overheating. Check whether the fan and heatsink are properly attached or not.
Regards;
IronMan.

Re: What is this problem with my PC
Thanks for the myriad of suggestions..
So is it mobo, processor, ram, smps, fan, heatsink..??
Mobo has no warranty. System detects the entire 2GB RAM.
And I was thinking it had something to do with faulty cluSters in HDD thoguh my machine is
not detecting it. No one commented on the same
CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND A GOOD FREE SOFTWARE FOR TESTING SYSTEM HARDWARE..??

Re: What is this problem with my PC
anything can be the issue as guys suggested. But highest chances is of SMPS (it has gone weak and is not suitable), change it and test other hardware.
2nd would have been RAM becoming incompatible or any of the two going bad, seems less as u said both are getting identified and working fine.
Because next comes loose connection in putting proccy heatsink and all connectors.
So once you are sure of your SMPS deassemble all your components and fix them again properly.

Re: What is this problem with my PC
Hi Windchimes,
If u have any device installed to USB like USB modem, then remove it and boot the PC. I used to hav the same prob, but later figured it out.
