same warranty on both and WD 640AAKS has a much better support + reliability + performance + value for money

Both are equally reliable companies. And yes, be careful with 640Gb.

all my hard drives are WD except 2 which are Seagate Cheetah + Seagate barracuda
i'd always advice WD
also Seagate has improved a lot in past yrs with their reliability issues and one should not have a problem getting it.but performance+value for money is nowhere near WD640AAKS

practically it gives a slightly better read speed but its slow in write speeds

Thats correct.
Drives with more buffer don't necessarily perform better.

And Seagate is fine too.(Replacement is easy & quick)

My 250 GB one crashed two times in 2 month ... But when I got 320 GB as replacement ... It is working well.

Go for the western digital, its more value for money and performs at par with seagate.

i'd suggest one thing-don't use windows partition utility.use gparted.coz u will lose data in case ur windows hangs during that process.use good power supply or make sure u don't underpower ur system.
And if ur drive makes some clicking noise or any noise (be it any brand) backup ur data asap and get it RMA'd
