Help required Understanding Chipsets

all i know about chipsets is that they r a set of specifications released by intel, amd, ... with which various vendors including the aforementioned manufacture motherboards
problem is: there have come around a plethora of them and its difficult to choose 1(only one). I have had tremendous help here choosing a motherboard (be it MSI, ASUS, GIGABYTE, ABit,...) but wat bothers me is dat wen i go to the vendor's shop they fire me with so many suggestions, i feel like doing my homework thoroughly
plz tell me the major and minor differences between these chipsets: X48, X38, P45, P43, G45, G43, G35, Q35, Q33, and finally the legendary P35

what i really dont understand is dat y is evry1 here (the xperts) suggesting boards based on P35 chipsets. I agree it performs but isnt it getting old???

Go to specific chipset vendors website like intel,amd, nvidia for know about different chipset's features.

For mobo's 1st look what you can get in your local market. Note the model numbers & then go to the specific mobo manufacture's website. Or if you like online shopping then go to the mobo manufactures website 1st. Then choose what suits you. Then go to the online stores like http://www.newegg.com/ or anything else.

At last if you have a confusion ask in here

dude in how much time does chipsets get old,
P35 is not old as you think. G33 chipset is even older. the 4 series you are talking about has been released very recently less than 2 months.

most of the time same chipset names are used until and unless there is no compatible proccy and they have made huge changes (915 and 945 chipsets currently).
915 and 945 were initally compatible for P4 and Pentium D proccies now they have been upgraded to include low end Intel proccies like 21xx and 4xxx.

Clear your doubts. P35 is nothing like legendry. Its just that after G33 and G31, P35 was introduced and there are good P35 chipset boards.

And people look mobos to recommend its just that the makers provide features according to the specification given by the base lines given by Intel, nVidia and Ati

P45 boards are better than p35 boards ( future proof )

yup P45 chipset is better, and after the launch Asus and MSI have come up with good boards.
People do not always recommend P35 but they recommend abit P35E.

And all this being mostly due to cost.
Also, I do not think we can be much futureproof with the quickly changing hardware specs, only can think of. P45 mobos start with 6K
You have lesser choices currently

Asus P5Q

Yup both ASUS P5Q and MSI P45 Neo have caught my eye. They are great boards.
Some questions though:--
1> The boards support SATAII interface. Will they support my old SATAI HDD?
2> Unlike MSI P35 Neo Combo these boards do not have provisions for DDR3 RAM. I say i fear that in a couple of months if DDR3 becomes commonplace we r done for. Or do u guys think DDR2 is here to stay (budget is important 4 me)?

its not that P35 is legendary....but rather its THE good board uptil now. As P45 has entered the market, P35 has fallen to the place of "comparatively old". If you had asked recommendations 1 year back, u would have heard names like G33, P35, 680i SLi, 965, 630i. and the year before that u would have heard names like 845, 865, 910, 915, DG101CC (dont remember if it was a board or a chipset) etc.

SATA is backward compatile so no issues there.
DDR3 currently are not not that better in price and performance against DDR2.
Priced alot high they do not give that much performance addition.
So it can be said DDR2 will surely stay.

Besides if you use a 64-bit OS you neednt worry much. You can increase as much ram u wannna put in, to make the performance rocking solid.
