Question HD 1850 Vs 8600GT

i was thinking about going for a new GFX card. budget of around 3-3.5 k

My choices are between a HD 1850 or a 8600GT, which do u think would serve me better for playing games in medium detail mode but with good frame rate?

another thing, will i need to invest in a new PSU? my current PSU is a 400W generic one that came with the cabinet.

another question, are Radeon GFX cards compatible on Intel Chipsets?

my system config is as follows:

Intel Pentium D 820, 2.8 GHz ( not overclocked)
ASUS P5LD2-VM SE( has an Intel 945G chipset) with onboard graphics( GMA 950)
2*512 MB DDR2 RAM- 667 MHz (of clock cycles 5-5-5-15-21)
Seagate 160 GB SATA II HDD
a PCI sound card
Technotech cabinet with generic 400W PSU
17" LG Flatron CRT monitor
500W Microtek UPS

If you are buying an 8600GT, you are buying an 'electronic' stove

HD cards from ATi gets heated up faster. I bought this HD3650XT and this is really an electric stove. I can feel the heat when I'm playing Crysis or Assassin's Creed.

@topic,
MSI 8600GT 256MB or Palit 8600GT Super should be your choice. Both are available within 3500/- !

@anubisX
for ur knowledge some 8600GT even touches 100~110c at stock.
Ive heard bout heating issues only on HD 3850 and 4850 single slot cooler ones, thats coz the massive GPU die is cooled by a small single slot cooler, but it do bring the prices to bottom.
3850 dual slot cooler ones runs unbelievably cool, nd dun even touches 60c at max load.

BTW, while playing crysis, is it the heat of the game or the card..
coz the game is damn hot

@spindoc
if u were mentioning bout 1900 or 1950 Pro or XT, they are way better performars than an 8600GT, or 8600GTS.
But they consume more power, so u ll need to get atleast a 1.2k 500W powersafe PSU.

Or wait a lil bit more as ATI HD 4650, 4450 etc are on its way and even 4450 will be much better than 8600GT[ acc to specs].

doesnt MSI 8600GT 256MB DDR3 come at that price? i had read it in earlier threads that it does.

so how much would a powersafe 500W PSU cost.

i aint going to overclock but i need my system to be as silent as possible, so can a powersafe 400W be sufficient with my rig + MSI 8600GT?

1850? rh?
ive never heard of it. I think there were only 1800,1900 and 1950.
1900 and 1950 are same but the latter has higher clocks and GDDR4.

A 1800GTO will suffice ur need and will be cheaper than an 8600GT.

Care to explain about it ? I entered the hardware geek club only during the GeForce 8000 era and Radeon 3000 era, so any previous GPUs I have absolutely NO knowledge of

1800GTO and 7600GT was neck to neck in performance with the former slightly better. Prices dropped considerably for both of em (from 12~13k on release). They became cheaper than 8600GT but 1800GTO performs slightly better at higher resolutions and AA turned on.
BTW a 1800GTO is nowhere near a 1800 pro or XT. and a 1950XTX[GDDR4] performs almost close to a 9600GT.
