I know that portable hard disks can be made by inserting regular hard disks into hard disk casings. Can the same thing be done with optical drives.
I mean can i insert a regular DVD burner into a casing and access it using a USB port or Firewire port and carry it around.
I want to know if this is possible or not as external DVD burners are still very costly.

I dont know, but if you want to carry data around, get 16GB USB drives, they are available, and are very light, lighter than carrying a DVD writer around.

yeah cases [IDE to USB] from tech.com & Zippys are available @~1000INRs ...u can get them to convert the internal DVDRW devices to external DVDRW devices...but on the precaution try to burn @ low speeds
else teh best way is to get Pen drives like dheeraj said the 4/8/16 gb ones....these are cheaper & viable in today's scenario
