CD/DVD ROM not working

My CD/DVD ROM is not working properly,
whenever i insert any disc, the device doesnt read it.When i prompt it to open the disc from my computer, it says "the disc is empty"(in vista) or "insert disk" (in XP).

I won a dell inspiron 1420.

looks like a bad drive to me....i feel optical drives are very prone to failure...anyway, you could try using a lens cleaner(cd with brush) on it to see if it could be dirty lens...
