Have you swapped the 4-pin Molex power connector with the one that works with IDE1 ?

Another thing you can try is a hard reset of the BIOS - not "Reset to default" from the BIOS screen, but clearing it by removing the CMOS battery and using the clear jumper on the mobo.

Sometimes the BIOS gets messed up for unknown reasons even if everything looks OK on the screen. Sometimes the jumper has to be left in the 'Clear' position for several minutes instead of the usual few seconds.

It could also be that the IDE2 port is damaged - either visibly (e.g. a bent pin) or invisibly (the electronics). If all else fails, you could get an IDE card.

@BBThumbHealer .... its a p4 2.66 MHZ, 1GB RAM on via mb .... mode thing, will checkout in bios right ?

@shantanu .... imo, updating bios is quite risky .... also switched drives from ide2 2 ide1 .... they get detected .... bt hdd on ide2 is not .....

bt yesterday night, i switched again 2 default [hdd=ide1 & drives= ide2] .... they both get detected .....

y is that sometimes it shows & othertimes no no ? any driver issue ....

If it gets detected once and does not at another time it may be bcos the cable is faulty or one of your peripherals if getting conked off,

I had the same prob and after buying a new cable everything was OK.

okey man ! something that might work , check your power supply (SMPS),seriously, and clean your motherboard with care... and if you motherboard is new and your vendor provides BIOS update do update your BIOS.. its very necessary .. and its no risk at all, only follow the correct method.
