I am not sure whether the following will help you or not but no harm in trying.
When I was partitioning/experimenting with my new hard disk, I did something wrong and then I was not able to access the hard disks for installing the OS. Immediately I fished out one of the oldest floppy disks called EBD (Emergency boot Disk) - which I think I had made during the Windows 95/98 days - and ran fdisk /mbr and I was back on track. This article may help you out if you do not have a bootable floppy with fdisk on it. http://askbobrankin.com/fix_mbr.html Good luck |

problem is that I am not able to install windows xp sp2 by any means.
Linux and vista goes fine. More specifically: I have hp-pavillion dv 5000(5118tx) When I use my recovery disc It goes fine upto around 25%, then it says" can not copy file" something like BASE_04.INP. then it stop saying installation complete. when I boot it says NTLDR missing. and prompt to restart. When I use windows XP SP2 cd made for hp PCs , it just does not recognise cd. When I use regular windows XP cd it ask to hit any key to boot from CD. when i hit a key it says something like "setup is inspecting your hardware configuration" and then a blank screen comes which stays even for hours(I have checked it), no more progress. I don't understand wht is going on? |

While I do not know about Linux, Vista's boot mechanism is radically and entirely different from that of XP and its predecessors. That perhaps explains why you are able to boot and install Vista but not XP.
Just try the fixmbr trick, either using fdisk or any other means.IMO, you will definitely be doing no harm to your hard disk.( if you are very much scared then take the hard disk/desktop/laptop - I do not know which) to your nearest Service center and they can fix the problem. |
