want 2 upgrade RAM & hard-disk

hi friends,

my present config is:
proccy: intel p4 (2.66 GHz)
mobo: pcchips P21G (V 1.0)
RAM: 256mb ddr
H/d: 40 Gb pata

i'm not willing 2 spend much. so i'm plannin 2 buy 512 mb RAM ddr & a SATA 160 gb h/d.
will my mobo support this or do i hav 2 upgrade whole of the thing.
i use my pc only for watchin videos n downloadin.

if i buy 512 mb ram, can i use my 256 mb ram in any way.
my budget is around 3k.

I'll suggest you to upgrade your rig to the latest c2d based system - a complete upgrade.

you want to upgrade the old rig go for 160GB sata hdd for Rs. 1800 & with rest money go for 256 mb ram. don't forget to buy ram with same frequency only. I think 512 MB ram is enough for dowloads & watching dvd & vcd movies.

1. if i buy a new C2D based system, then what will b the cost?
2. ya, that is my mobo.
3. my mobo has only 2 slots for RAM, if i use 2 * 256mb then in future i may hav prob, if i go 4 single 512mb stick, then i can easily upgrade upto 1 gb in future.

??? his pc is not more than 4 years old....... quite capable of d'ling/videos. where the need for a complete upgrade???

A decent entry level PC will cost Rs. 20000 all included.

Ya, You can go for 512MB Ram. I suggest 256 MB Ram as I've thought that 256MB Ram is around Rs.1200 which you could get after buying a 160GB HDD.

he never mentioned he used his comp to play games....
Btw i read somwhere that HD videos can be played without problems with a minimum of 1.2-1.4Ghz. so again, for his needs there is no immediate need of "complete upgrade".

i would love new pc config , but money is a serious constraint. now i just want my pc 2 b faster, i'll upgrade at a later stage.
