Re: Querries about PC usage
IMHO, there should not be any problem. However, if you want, you can check the hard disk and processor temperature through hardware monitoring softwares like Speedfan whenever you feel that the pc has been running for a long time.

Re: Querries about PC usage
What SMPS do you have? It should be robust enough to take long hours of operation.
I too download a lot, but I do it on OpenSuSE. The biggest advantage of using linux for long hours is you do not need an antivirus or antispyware running in the background. So your system has less work. And if you use fluxbox, you can reduce the burden still further.

Re: Querries about PC usage
If you are worried about heating issues, then get a good cooler for your comp and add an extra fan in the cabinet.

Re: Querries about PC usage
^^In that case you dont have to worry about the PSU
Just add an extra fan in the cabinet.

Re: Querries about PC usage
you can build a download box for as low as 5k or so and it will be really power-saving.

Re: Querries about PC usage
Just pay attention to cooling..and nothing else.
keep room tem. normal......
Add another fan to cabinet.
Check SMPS, cabinet and Processor fan regularly.
Thats all...nothing more for 10 hrs work daily.
I keep my PC working for more than 12 hours a day

Re: Querries about PC usage
IMO, with a good antivirus running in the background, and with hard disks staying below 40-45C, there should not be any harm to the pc.

Re: Querries about PC usage
dust will be a major issue. Ull have to clean the components frequently.
most of the time i shutdown my PC to clean off the dust from fans and heatsinks.
And in moist climate dust + moisture cud cause serious damage for components.

Re: Querries about PC usage
Use everest to hdtemp to check hdd temps. Best would be to use the "oldest" PC in your home and make it a headless download box. Control it via your other PC. Let it be the slowest computer amongst all you haf, strip off the floppy/optical drive/kb/mouse/monitor/pref. onborad gfx and run Linux on it.
Configure it and and disable the GUI and make it a media server and download box. Apart from being a download box, it'll also serve as your central repo for all your songs/videos and what not. Just plug in the high capacity hdds to it
Using your rig for long hours only for downloading is utter waste of cpu and gpu cycles. Not to mention the power that monster draws for doing nothing!

Re: Querries about PC usage
OK you can use this system, but give it some rest after some dayz, mebbe for a few hours. The only reason why I suggested that was to save power/noise and also that while the download/media server is downloading heavily you can still play a high end game on your PC

Re: Querries about PC usage
The GPUs will be idle while on normal work or dling. The GTU temps will be down to bottom and the GPU fans will be running at lowest speeds. U can manually turn down their speeds to lowest using rivatuner. But make sure they are hiked up back before starting any game.
The only thing gonna worn out are fans. Their bearings has a maximum rated lifetime of work and the lifetime cud be stretched if they are turning at lower speeds.
If ur system is gonna run foe very long time and at absolutely no loads , then i recommend u to plug off some system fans coz heat wont be issue, but dust maybe.
Or use the system in ur siggy for dls and free the burden off your 8800GTS SLI
celeron is gud at handling dls

Re: Querries about PC usage
I think it can handle till 80GB. Just plug in ur IDE hdd and see. Then use it as a download RIG Best option!

Re: Querries about PC usage
Use a blower to clean ur PC components!
Its easier to use and doesn't require to remove ur hardware!

Re: Querries about PC usage
i am used to keeping my PC on for say days together.
only time i shut it off when there is a power failure, typically on thursdays.
i have never faced any problems with my system.
so be rest assured and if you are still worried follow above advice to monitor system temperatures.
