2. WD CaviarŪ SE16 7200 500GB................features 16MB buffer and brand name Western Digital

Need a quick suggestion which one to go for......I'd love to have some live examples who are currently using the HDDs........thanks in advance.....

The Seagate Barracuda 32MB one will beat the Western Digital in almost all the categories like Burst Rate, Avg Transfer Speeds, Write Speeds, etc.

For more information you can check out this chart from Tom's Hardware:
Tom's Interactive 3.5" Hard Drive Charts

The 500GB WD model u specified is not there but you can get a idea while comparing with an older WD500GB or newer WD 750GB ones.

It beats both of them in most of the categories there.

IMHO, you should go for the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB - ST3500320AS model.

Normally i never says good about seagate and a diehard western Digital supporter but with 32MB Cache....seagate is a better choice if the price is same!

Price diff is negligible, couple of hundereds. Got this one for 5400. Incidently external HDDs 500 GB USB 2.0 are also around the same price......

Yes I know WD has earned its name but segate for now with its perpendicular recording tech and 32 MB buffer easily beats WD caviar in all benchmarks......plus I have been using segate right from the begining when I bought my first 2.1 GB HDD (still keeping it as a souvenir) so reliability is no concern as well I guess.
