My experience with wireless at home hasn't been too good. I used a Netgear WAP, and found out that it was giving me access only in that room and the next. I believe that
1. The signals don't bend round corners very easily (like sound waves do)
2. They don't penetrate walls (not too sure about this, I was told so)
3. Signal is broadcast as a "Sphere of influence" from the antenna, by changing the direction of the antenna, you can shift this "sphere"

For a wireless network you need:
1) All system with wireless LAN card
2) A wifi supporting router.

In december digit nice article is given on setting up a wifi at home. It's given in Connect part.

They used the popular Wifi Router named "Linksys WRH54G".

All setup and configuration settings are nicely explained there.

Totally agree ! I used Wifi mainly for Streaming Video to the PSP. The Video streams flawlessly in 1 room, but as soon as you move to the next, theres constant stutter

If you are going for a Router I suggest the Linksys WRT54G. Lots of Mods available for this router. To increase range you can also make something like this :
