Unhappy cannot install win xp

I dont know i should be putting it in the hardware section or the software section..but i am having a strange problem.Whenever i am trying to install Windows Xp or Windows 2000, after loading all the files when it shows the screen- "Press enter to Set up Windows now"
"Press R to enter into recovery console"
my computer just shuts down.i have tried some 50 times and then gave up. i even called up a technician..aftter some permutation and combination with different HD,RAM,MB,PROCESSOR and SMPS..he concluded that the MB and Processor are at fault and i have to change it...with great difficulty he has managed to take me back to stone age...i mean he has installed WIN 98.
What should i do...?????

Install XP using another optical drive. Maybe some reading problem .Something like this happened for me too. I tried reinstalling almost 10~15 times repeatedly, nd i tried another drive from my second system it just worked fine.
But there was no file missing/reading error showed in first case, dun know what went wrong with that drive then. Now its working fine

If all else fails, take the hdd to a friend's place and start the installation there.
When XP reboots before device detection etc. take out the hdd and put it back in your system and continue from there.

I also feel it shud be a problem with the XP CD or the CD/DVD drive. Try another XP CD or another drive as aravind mentioned. Or try installing using ur CD on some other comp.

Regarding your hardware configuration, XP will easily install as I have the same configuration.

This may happen with the corrupt partition table or any lose contact.
Tight all the connection then use the following if your hard disk is not conatin any important data.
First, break the partition using any free partition software. I recomends the use of Seagate Disk Manager, Fdisk etc. If you are regualr reader of digit, then you should find some partition software on Digit Cd December 2006, its ultimate boot cd (UBCD). Use any one you like.

Then install Windows XP. I sure that this time it will installed properly.
