DVD writer gone kaput

i hav a samsung SH-W162Z DVD Writer.
i was burning a dvd today and the dvd got ejected out at 80% .i am using nero 8.
then my dvd writer is not able to read any disk.whenever i am inserting a disc ,the led indicator is blinking for just a second and then nothing happens.

i hav tried reinstalling the drive by uninstalling it from device manager but no help.

the firmware of the drive is also latest TS02

help me,what could be the problem

Try cleaning lens using lens cleaner CD.
That might help..else get it replaced if it is under warranty.

its not under warranty now.the warranty ended in august

i hav tried reflashing the firmware also but its not working

can dvd writers be repaired

I don't have any idea regarding rapair.
But I will suggest, instead of repairing, get a new one..it will cost Rs. 1300/-

get 1.pioneer,2.benq (if you can get hold of them)

otherwise asus or liteon.

Never buy samsung ROM.
They have always some problem.

Prefer SONY or Liteon.
Both will cost around Rs. 1300/-

i hav heard of some disc reading problems in sony drives

i can get asus and liteon drives here.can u suggest the model also
litescribe and sata is preferred

suggest a good 18X or 20X model of sony with sata and litescribe

does asus has a 20x lightscribe sata model.i cant find it on their site

why waste money on 20x models?there aren'y media available that could be written at 20x.

Utsav bose forget all the above comments,get liteon simple sata dvd writer 16x\20x without lightscribe.Sony and liteon uses the same chipset.

First hunt for pioneer drives,they will be a bit costly but best bang for your bucks.

actually these drives now offer overspeed burning.so no need of high speed media.

cant get pioneer here,

only lite on,samsung,sony and asus.

i hav got to know that 16x drives r completely phased out from my city.so 18x or 20x is option

problems

lite on is very noisy.
sony has some dvd detection problems.(read in my forums and here too)

so asus is what i wanna go for

^^ok.Overburn is not at all reliable.I would have saved 100-200 rupees if I were you.

yea pioneers are nearly impossible to get hold of sadly.

Dunno about asus ones.

Liteon rocks.I trust it closed eyes.

why not spend 100bucks more and get future proof.

which model of liteon should i considor with sata,lightscribe and 18x/20x support

^^different way of thinking I guess.Even if I have a 16x writer I burn only at 8x just for making sure my data is safe.

Liteon--20x,sata(if you mobo is sata one),non-lightscribe(useless,light scribe media aint available,you'll save 100-200 rupees).

I think The model is 20AIP iirc.
