Microsoft pointer jumps
I just bought a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse v1.0A with USB interface.
The problem is, the pointer sometimes jumps itself across the screen.
Since it's a new mouse, the question of dust/dirt can't arise.
I have tried running the mouse on a mouse pad with prints, on a solid black mouse pad & even on a flat wooden surface.
I have installed the Microsoft Intellipoint v6.2 software.
Does this problem happen with all optical mouses? Or does it happen only with my mouse brand & model?
Kindly help me.

Re: Microsoft pointer jumps
I have noticed the problem on all the basic optical mice that I have used (Logitech, iBall, and Samsung)... I think it has to do with the surface, but not sure what the best solution is... Now, I have a laser mouse at home, and so far I dont have that problem...

Re: Microsoft pointer jumps
I asked many of my friends & relatives who use optical mouse.
None of them have this problem.
I contacted Microsoft Hardware Service Centre & they say that they'll check it & repair or replace it if problem is found.

Re: Microsoft pointer jumps
Yes it is the surface. If your mouse mat is glossy try using one with a little felt/coarse finish

Re: Microsoft pointer jumps
Using optical mice without an average quality pad can cause such problems.
I mean 'average quality' for surface, nd not the quality of the material.
Get somethin with cloth surface. Itll fix it.
Never use on normal wooden surface, the feet of da mouse wud suffer.

Initially, I used a mouse pad with gloss finish when I was using my old ball mouse. After buying this new optical mouse, I tried it on the back of the mouse pad which is black & material is foam type, not rubber. But anyway, I'll get the mouse checked today. If it turns out to be fine, then I'll buy myself a pad with cloth.

Well, curently I was running it on a polished wooden surface. But now I'll use it on mouse pad. Thanks for advice.

Re: Microsoft pointer jumps
Yep. In most cases the pad is the culprit here. Most of the pads used for Roller based mouse doesn't work fine with Optical mouse.

Re: Microsoft pointer jumps
Simple
Take a Pad /Old Exam Pads or Calender Pads Or Notebook Pads..Make sure Its strong & has a smooth surface
Take a Velvet Cloth [ U can Buy one --cheap Though or ur sis Dress...bless u if u dodge the blow ]
Wrap it neatly & Use it ....will be fine
I used a glass Trimmed , blended the corners & Rounded edges 4 the base
Now the mouse should be fine
BTW even i have 2 Mic Basic Optical Mouse with USB

I'm not agreeing with you.
Logitech Basic/Tilt Optical mouse works without any problem.
You need to set pointer speed & other properties from Mouse properties to make pointer stable (jump free).
About glossy surface I use my friends Intelli Mouse - don't know model- on Sunmica Pad and it works without any jump to other problem.
MS basic optical mouse jumps - its serious problem with it and to rectify it MS introduce MS Basic Optical Mouse V2.
Write to MS hardware to replace it with V2 and they might accept it (99.99%)

Re: Microsoft pointer jumps
Alright guys.
I got my mouse replaced.
The problem indeed was with the previous mouse.
The new mouse doesn't have this problem.
And, apparently they gave me a newer model, MS Basic Optical Mouse v2 in place of my v1A.
And boy, does this mouse look sexier than it's predecessor.

Re: Microsoft pointer jumps
Well, the previous one was v1.0A.
The newer one is v2.0.
I don't think it's available in market yet.
If it is, it'll must be expensive cos I haven't seen anyone stocking this mouse.
In my case, I was lucky to get this one as replacement.

They don't need the bill.
They check the warranty using the PID (serial number) printed behind the mouse.
And then carry over the warranty over the replacement piece.
It's just like in case of hard disks.

I had originally bought v1.
I was given v2 as replacement.
Actually, the service centre had both v1 & v2.
He asked me to which one I wanted as both were Basic Optical Mouse.
So, naturally I chose v2.
But don't think that when u'll get u'rs replaced, he'll offer u the choice or will have v2 in stock.
I had to wait 3 days for replacement as they didn't have them in stock.
