Yup most of them require it to be set to cable select mode or no jumper..

ThanX guys . Well , the jumper was on cable select , still it was not working.

No manual was provided with the casing . The casing was from "SVB" ( searched quite a lot but couldn't find another in Nagpur). The hard disk is spinning , but then nothing else happens . May be the circuit is faulty .

probably a faulty case

Quote:
First I would like to say thank you for your help, the problem was the external HDD case. I removed the drive, switched the jumpers to slave, and installed the drive into a tower computer. It worked, I am able to access the critical files on the drive. I isolated the external case as the problem by inserting another HDD into the case, and connecting it to my personal lap...same message "New Hardware Detected 24". I am not sure what would cause the case itself to fail, but never the less it can be replaced.

but b4 u draw d same conlcusion, i suggest u taked d HDD+casin sum place else to confirm d cause of d problem, besides everythin else d quoted guy did
