1394 is the FIREWIRE port and there is nothing to be afraid about it.We can also Lan using this port.It is used to connect devices like the USB port.
Either you have a creative Audigy card which have firewire ports , or your motherboard has inbuilt firewire.
Dont worry and enjoy the speed of firewire.
Use this port when you have to transfer Videos from your Camcorder.Its also called as a DV port.

Yes a LAN can be built using IEEE 1394, which much better speeds (upto 400Mbps).......LAN is create like any other network.......If IEEE 1394 ports are available on both computers, connect the two computers with an IEEE 1394 cable. On each machine, Windows XP should create a new network connection and assign it an IP address. You should then be able to open a Windows Explorer window to the other computer by typing \\machine name or IP in the address bar or on run command. You'll be presented with whatever shared resources the machine makes available.(you can share a resource by right clicking on the resource, properties and sharing TAB.) At this point you can then transfer files back and forth at speeds much higher than on most other networks.

For detail tutorial I'd suggest google it.

Offtopic : is ur C2D 1.8GHz performance(considering only 1 proccessor) is it equivalent to Athlon64 1.8GHz(while doing testing Athlon 1.8GHz is rated as 3GHz)...
in simple i'm asking is C2D 1.8GHz(considering single proccy) == Athlon 64 1.8GHz ?
