Default Getting RAM's for by intel 845

Helo everyone,
I have a intel 845 chipset and want to upgrade my RAM. I currently have 256 mb ram. I had a decision to get 1 GB ram and was suggested to use two 512 mb ram sticks. My query is that can i use both my 256 mb and 1 GB ram sticks to work together. I was told it would lead to some problem. Since i am not sure what problem would rise, please help me regarding this. I am not a hardware geek though i would like to know how things work and what can be my solution .........

Thanks

It will not give you any problem if both the RAMs are of same BUS speed. If the BUS speed differs, the RAMs will not be comaptible.

Better sell that 256 mb RAM to the dealer from which you want to buy 1gb RAM. But, go for dual module kit (2 RAMS of 512 mb each).

instead of spending 4k for 1gb of DDR RAM sell ur MB itself and get ASUS 945G for 2.8K and DDR2 1GB RAM for 1.7k.....(if u r in tight budget-core 2 duo 800Mhz compatible also)

@cyberboy_kerala

well its not about P4 2.0 or some thing else... its Socket which matters in this case....

Mention board I suppose was P5B-MX its one LGA 775 processor Socket one... so if that P4 is one LGA 775 then yup it will support, if its one 478 then nope it wont...
