DVD writer wont read cd's

all of a sudden today i found that i m unable to read cd's in my dvd writer

it is a SONY DVD RW DRU-820A

it is reading all dvd's but not cd's

it is only reading countable cd's

rest of the cd's are read as black or r not detected at all



pls help me out.

Try firmware upgrade.

apps
even digit n chip cd's

but could it be a Booktype setting problem?

i updated firmware

it now reads some cd's but not all

n it is taking long time to read a cd

on the other hand dvd is read a lot faster campared to cd

dude try crossflashing it to a nec drive and then try....but be sure to also download the lates firmware for the 820a...u find all info regarding this at liggys firmware page or clubcdfreaks..

well isaw one of the similar posts in the forum n found that a worm called brontok affects the cd and dvd drives

i scanned my system and to my bad luck i found it


how do i remove it

udi baba....never heard of a worm giving crc errors (lolz).........neways....type the exact name in google like....W32.brblahblahblah....and ull get the removal tool frm symatec website......

i removed that worm
forums said it affects optical drives

but my problem is still not solved

dvd's still run

but when u put a cd in it makes weird noises

it is not reading any cd's

i upgraded the firmware already
it made dvd's autoplay faster but cd's still not working

is this an os issue

no if the drive is making some noises then no firmware can help...take to the service senter (rashi peripherals for the sony)....

the funny thing is that it makes no noise n reads dvd's smoothly

but as soon as u insert a cd it starts makes noise n stops spinning


i uninstalled the driver
n then scanned for devices to reinstall it

i get a msg that the driver is not digitally signed




ya it even burns dvd's

i dont get it whr the problem lies

try a format and re-install windows

boss why dodnt u take it to the service center....if its making noises then most probably the head alignment has gone wrong....most probably ull get a new drive..

try attaching & reading those cds @ ur frds place ............

if same problem then move 2 service center ............

well i have a old cd-rw drive too

all cd's work in it

the problem is with dvd rw drive

i will have to take it for servicing

as far as i noe...there is no worm which falters the working of a optical drive...if u guys noe of one...plzz do tell.

your dvd writr is defected. I have also faced this problem in past but i have replaced my dvd writer under warranty
