Default Connecting a SATA n Pata together HELP

i recently upgraded my pc... i bought a 160gb SATA hard disk...
I hav a old 80gb regular PATA hard disk....

i am not able make my SATA - primary n PATA- secondary....

but i can make pata primary with SATA working as a secondary...

The reason i want SATA primary is that i can using PATA as a storage device n take it around when ever i want....n most of the pc which i may connect still doent hav SATA compatiblity....

So can some one tel me how to do it. ???

When i connect it the way i want the system doesnt boot...
I had xp installed in both hard dish to try it out...

if u wan2 make ur pata secondary master/slave attach it 2 d other ide cable

assumin dat secondary means primary slave

did u check d jumper settings of ur PATA drive 2 c if d SATA is made Primary and d PATA is made slave

plug out ur PATA, keep only d SATA
do a fresh install of d OS
den attach d PATA [jumper remember], u shud b able 2 use d SATA as Primary and PATA as secondary

preferrably format and repartition d PATA after dis

Post Re: Connecting a SATA n Pata together HELP

first c if ur bios has an option where u can choose sata as primary booting hdd and pata as secondary hdd... here it does not matter how u have connected the both d hdd.... but only thing is u should have a latest bios ( such options r available in latest bios only depending upon ur mobo).

secondly if u dont have such bios... then
connect pata as primary/secondary slave (to make pata slave just remove the jumper short pin behind the pata disk, then its slave)... and connect sata disk to primary sata slot (yeah even sata have primary & secondary sometimes... depends on mobo & bios version)... this should work.

if u cannot boot into sata... then press F11 while booting and boot selection pop up menu will appear and choose sata disk and see whether its booting now into sata or not.

i tried the connecting thing by making sata primary by connecting to the 1st pin then removed the jumper off the pata to make it a slave still its booting from PATA.. let me try the F1 thing

Active partition

Partition is usually made active while creating d partitions. sinc i got seagate hdd i used its disc wizard to do it

i am not sure, but i think dat u ca aslo make a aprtiton active from within windows OS, provided d partition is on a diff HDD not conataining d runnin OS

Post Re: Connecting a SATA n Pata together HELP

yup a partition has to be made active if its primary and if its not made active then system will not boot into the hdd.

making partition active can be done in windows disk management tool also....

just right click on the primary partition block in the disk management tool in windows.... and set it active.

@ the person who has m2n mobo....

i think ur mobo is recent one which has the option describe above in ma post (i'm just makin a guess lookin at the model) so u can change the settings in ur bios.
