Help setup Wireless network @ home

Hi Techies,

I intend to setup wireless network @ home between my desktop and laptop and perform following operations:

1. Connect & logon to SIFY broadband directly using wireless. (I suppose i need a router).

2. Connect my desktop to SIFY broaband using wired or wireless.

3. Connect my laptop to desktop using wireless. I heard of ad-hoc connection but is it possible using router.

4. Connect my laptop to desktop using wireless and share internet on both systems. Let the desktop be the primary system to connect to SIFY and then share internet to my laptop.

When i seached on the net i came to know that i should by a wireless router and wireless adaptor (Not sure wireless USB or LAN).

Techies, please help me setup this network and it would be great if you could explain the step by step process to configure in order to achieve the above said connections. Also it would be great if you could suggest which range router to purchase because my desktop where i want to setup router is upstair and i shud be able to connect using laptop from ground floor. Just to let inform you, its duplex house and with a distance of 100 mts between the 2 places.

Early reply would be appreciated.

Note to moderator: I know i shud be searching in forum before asking the question but trust me i have digged into it and got a lot of info but was confused so created a new thread.

you need following hardware:
1) Two wireless LAN card (each on desktop and laptop)..will come around Rs. 1200/-

2) A wireless router (will come around RS. 3500/-)

Steps to setup wireless network:
1) Attach wireless LAN card on both PC and desktop
2) Install wiress LAN card on them
3) Give power to your wireless router.
4) Read the manual of the wireless router ..and find the default gateway.It may be either
192.168.1.1 OR
192.168.0.1

5) In ur desktop..start-->>control panel-->>Network connections
Right click wireless LAN card ..and select properties-->>TCP/IP properties

6) Fill the form as (I suppoese default gateway of your wireless router is 192.168.1.1)
192.168.1.2
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1

and in DNS address..as given by ur sify.

7) Follow steps 5 and 6 in ur laptop also...just change Ip in laptop as 192.168.1.3

8 ) Now on ur desktop..open IE and type address as 192.168.1.1 (default gateway of wireless router)
you will be asked user name and password..the default username and password is written in the manual. In most cases default user name is admin and default password is password
and configure ur wireless router as per ur sify connection.

And in first port of the wireless router..insert your sift incoming wire.you can now share your internet.


To share data between two.....
start-->>control panel-->>network setup wizard
run the setup on both PC and laptop ..now you can share data also.
Now you can share data also.

Thanks a lot for providing the step by step process for connection. After reading you reply following are my queries:

1. My Laptop has a build in wireless adaptor and not in desktop. So for desktop should I go for a USB wireless adapter or wireless LAN card (which comes with a small antenna).

2. After setting up wireless devices in both will i be able to perform the following:
a) Connect & logon directly to SIFY net from laptop when my desktop is
Off.
b) Connect to my desktop from laptop and share internet in laptop when
desktop is connected to SIFY or do i need to temporarily change any
settings for this connection and revert back.

I have never seen or used USB wireless adapter.But it can also be used.

yes ..

NO..but not conform...may need some more setting.
