What has happened to the HDD??

I'm Running Win XP Pro in a P4 with 256 RAM. I have a 40Gb seagate HDD (2 yrs old). When I install Programs, I usually get errors that the file is corrupted.. Actually the data gets corrupted very often...

I have scanned the HDD with HDD-Regenerator, but I found no Bad Sectors..

I even reinstalled XP. But the problem persists.

Help...

1.) u maybe using pirated versions of the softwares.....
2.)there may be some virus that maybe corrupting ur files///..
3.)frequent power failures may also result into corrupting the files..

Your hard disk must have bad sectors.

If u'r file system is FAT32, then arrange a bootbale Win98 floppy or CD.
Boot thru it.
Then in command prompt, run the following command:

scandisk/all/surface/autofix/nosave

This will scan u'r hard disk for logical as well as physical errors and mark all the bad sectors.
Try running the utility 3-4 times as not all bad sectors get marked on a single run.

If it's NTFS, then run chkdsk /f/r.
Don't force a dismount. Press y to schedule it for next restart.
Repeat it for all partitions.
Now restart the system. And let the chkdsk scan & find & mark bad sectors (if any).

If that doesnt work, then use Seagate's Seatools program.

Else use third party hard disk checking softwares.

If none of these work, then better backup what good data u have and get the hard disk replaced.

If there are bad sectors, then the above commands will mark them and recover all the data from them.

If there are bad sectors, then backup u'r drive contents onto any another drive. And get the hard disk replaced from Seagate Service Centre.

They will replace it cos like u said u purchased it 2 years ago. That means u'r hard disk has 5 years warranty. Check it here:

If it's not & warranty has expired, then u'r in bad luck.
Try taking the bill with u to service centre.

Use Norton Systemwork to check the whole disk problem or try to yun defrag they will show you the status of the bad sector.

no still there....

scanned for Bad Sectors, does not show any.

Tried to REMOVE bad sectors with HDD Regenerator, which also does not show any...

Can u please name the files which it shows corrupted?
Are they only system files? is the same file getting corrupted everytime?

Stop using all those regenerator softwares.
installed any softwares recently?

Your hard disk has most probably got corrupted.
Better if u back up the data in another drive (not partition) and get the hard disk reaplced.
The same happenned to a friend of mine & he eventually had to get his replaced.

You could try one thing.
Backup u'r data on another hard disk.
And do a full format of the hard disk, not a quick format.
It will completely erase all of the data on hard disk by writing 0's to all sectors.
If this too does not help, then better get your hard disk replaced.

Man faulty RAM can show weird symptoms.I've personally encountered two similar cases where the ram was faulty.In one case the mbr would get corrupted after each reboot.
The computer won't start if the RAM's totally kaput,but many times it will start and behave erratically...... restarts,freezes etc.
And he's scanned thoroughly for BS so no harm in confirming the RAM before purchasing a new hdd.

just backup ur HDD as QUICKLY as possible ...... u never know when it will happen .........


& perform a FULL format ..........

Do you do regular disk cleanup and defragment???
