my hitachi deskstar 80gb 7200rpm SATA hdd generally runs at a temp of about48 deg cel when the sys is idling and during gaming goes up to 57 deg cel. is this temp range normal?

35 - 50 degrees is a healthy temperature. I also have a Hitachi Dextar 250 GB 7200rpm SAT HDD, it varies from 42-48 degrees

try the diskdefragmentation and scan disk for errors,,,, may be after this u hdd will work good,,

it happens some times if errors or not fixed and an allocation table problem exits...

I never let it cross 50 degrees. Now its running at 40. I have opened my cabinet to allow some air in it and it really helps, Try it! Though dust is an issue

I am using 80GB Hitachi SATA II HDD and Speedfan's SMART analysis reports as follows.
"The average temperature for this hard disk is 37C (MIN=28C MAX=47C) and yours is 41C."
