i think the better..more cost efficient alternative will be to buy a hard disk and get an external casing for it. you can choose watever capacity you want for the harddisk.and the casing is for 500-700.

or if you still want an 'external' hard disk then you can go to techtree they have reviewed quite a few ones...

You get IDE to usb or SATA to usb converter kits. I am not sure about the price. but I guess it should be well less than 1k.(500 or 600)
it looks something like this

i think its not a very good option to buy an internal hdd with casing for a laptop..i had it for a month or so ..and in that time my hdd crashed abt 5-6 times and subsequently i lost 2 of my partitions and arnd 40 gb of stuff...so beware !

a laptop hdd in an external case is much more cost effective and should not give any prob. i've been using one for about an year now. the costs i checked yesterday are rs.2100 for 40gb and rs2800 for 80gb. both are seagate 5200rpm laptop hdd in an advik external case. cots are of nehru place, new delhi

not sure about the 160gb hdd. will find out prices and let u know. that may be on the higher side since 160gb laptop hdds sren't very common. however if u live in delhi, the best shop to get ur comp goods is computer empire from nehru place new delhi. ask anybody in nehru place about the shop and he'll guide u there. he's got the best prices in delhi. thats why at any given time there's the max rush in this shop. i use my 40gb external seagate hdd with an hp laptop. it doen't slow down the laptop at all. however battery consumption obniously increases while the external hdd is attached

yes thats the shop i'm talking about. however i feel that u r getting the disks very expensive. u should either take a 80gb external hdd and wait for costs of 120 and 160gb to come down. however if it is urgebt go for the 120gb one since it gives muh better cost/gb
