SATA I or II

I've got a ASUS A8N VM mb which supports SATA II. i'm planning to get a new hdd (160gb). should i go for SATA I or II? what is the proce difference and the performance diff. is it worth it?

Even ig ur Mb does not support SATA II,than also you can use sata II..but it will give a performance equalvalent to sataI.

Yeah sata II is for sure a better choise.

Sata II is believed to be slightly faster than sata I.
sata II have larger cached buffer.

I am not sure about the mobo support for sata II but you still might consider going for sata II as there is hardy any price difference. Plus the actual performance difference is also nothing much to talk about.

Larger buffer has nothin to do with sata 1 or 2.
Its just the amount of RAM allocated on a HDD to buffer data before writing on disc.
Sata 2 has theoritical 300MBPS data transfer speed whereas SATA1 has onle 150 MBPS. But ny normal HDD wont even use half of the bandwidth. But its always better to go future proof, so get sata2 HDD.

Seagate 160GB sata2 [8MB buffer]: 2.6k
Seagate 250 Gb sata2 [16MB buffer]: 3.5k
Hitachi 250 GB sata2[8MB buffer]: 3.6k
The 250 GB has better bang for the bucks and perfomance wise also its better as its got 16MB buffer.
