Default Need help with Dual channel setup(RAM)

I have the following setup
Slot 1 --- 256MB
Slot 2 --- Empty
Slot 3 --- 256MB
Slot 4 --- Empty
the above setup works flawlessly in dual channel

now I plan to do the following (have the following setup)
Slot 1 --- 256MB
Slot 2 --- 512MB
Slot 3 --- 256MB
Slot 4 --- 512MB

a)will all(alternate) modules work in dual channel???
b) will there be any problem if i have 2x256 aswell as 2x512???

a) NO, none of them will work in dual channel, In theory they should work, but I know there are more than enough compatibility issues that they will not work in that setup for 99.99%.

b) Yes, depending on your motherboard, the ram might no run at DDR 400, but can get clocked to DDR 333, you will not be able to run them at 1T command rate, and there is a possibility of additional Issues.

but ive used like his second condition with
512,256,512,256 in Dual ch 400Mhz@3-3-3-7@1T
The 512s are transcent
and 256s are Dynet

there was no issue. the board is A8NE

if you use different modules with diffrent chipset its CAN never be DUAL CHANNEL...

and you can use anyway you want but the perfect IDEA is to use all sticks of same company and size ... (THATS always better)

@shantanu_webmaster
Yes what u said is right to some extent. Onle real condition is both channels should be identical, say
512 transcent+256 dynet in one channel, then 2nd channel should be tha same modules in same order.
But surely u get the overclocking ability of the least quality modules among them. SO i couldn't overclock as dynet refused.

Yeah !! thats correct but the thing is that if all channels are not identical , the variation is so much in the busses of different size and chipset modules that it lacks performance as you said bout overlocking... BUT its fine if you are just a casual user and not a gamer etc..

i just told for knowledge nothing personal

A8N-E is supposed to be a high end board, a non-sli version of A8N-SLI, I have the same board, and it can do 400Mhz in four slots, but I seriously doubt it was dual channel, even if one ram is single sided and other is double, the darn thing wont work, leave alone four slots. There are far too many compatibility issues like I said, and there's not much chance it will work.

So I already said it can work in theory, but it never does....
